i adore living in the great state of minnesota. i honestly do. so much to do, so many places to go, and pretty pretty snow! the only thing i hated about snow is driving in it. perhaps it's because my lil' civic couldn't handle the slippery road conditions, causing white knuckles and migraines. sure sliding around corners is fun when no cars are present. in fact, i'll admit, i secretly would make my car slide around corners for the fun of it! however, i don't enjoy the sliding around corners when other cars are present. or, oh, i don't know, trying my hardest to get up a slightly snowy hill to find my tires just spinning spinning spinning, until 10 minutes later, i'm finally up that small hill with a long line of traffic behind me, cursing at me, and God knows what other sorts of gestures!
for the past couple winters, my husband and i have talked about buying snow tires. "they'll make such a big difference!" he says. yea right. i was skeptical. extremely skeptical. my solution was to sell the lil' black beauty and get a big SUV with 4-wheel drive. unfortunately, the budget says no go on the new car. so finally this winter, we ordered the snow tires.
i drove with them for the first time today. oh. my. God. i have been missing out! what a huge difference! still a little slidey at parts, but not nearly as bad as it had been! in fact, driving in snow is no longer a terrifying experience for me! sure the commute this morning was long and slow, but i didn't have to worry about spinning out or not being able to make it up that hill or sliding around a corner into the cars stopped ahead!
my advice to those in snowy climates: SNOW TIRES!

lessons learned in ice resin
i decided to play with a new medium today for making necklaces: ice resin!! the wonderful thing about ice resin is that i can create those beautiful dome necklaces that i adore so much. today was the first trial using ice resin and here's what i learned:
1) mix a smaller amount! i had to throw away too much unused product. next time i'm mixing half of what i did today! (1/4 of a cup next time...)
2) mix gently! otherwise, lots and lots of bubbles to get out. no fun.
3) thoroughly seal the paper before pouring the ice resin. oh yea, and allow adequate dry time for the sealed paper.
the most important lesson learned today is lesson 3. if the paper isn't sealed (and dried) thoroughly, the ice resin seeps through the paper causing a dark, discolored look. which = not pretty!
next time i'll take my time and not be so anxious to play with the resin and hopefully my necklace will turn out fabulous! wait. not hopefully. it WILL turn out fabulous!
p.s. as soon as i have fabulous necklaces made, i'll sell them on etsy.com and i'll post a link to my online store at that time.

wheat thins...
wheat thins are my crack. i can't leave any wheat thins in my line of sight or I will eat them all. seriously. all of them. i'm addicted. i have to hide them from myself or i'll eat an entire box! damn you, wheat thins, for being so tasty!!
and i digress.
and i digress.
Open Letter to AZ Weather
Dear AZ Weather-
While I appreciate your desire to remind those in the great warm state of AZ what cold weather feels like, I do have one concern. I will be visiting AZ for Christmas and have but one request. Please please please bring back the warm weather Arizonans have come to know and love, if only for the week of 12/23/09 - 12/29/09. You see, living in the frozen tundra known as South Central Canada AKA Minneapolis, MN, I already remember what cold weather feels like. In fact, the current temperature is -5 degrees. There is no need to punish the already punished. So it is with great respect and admiration that I ask you, AZ Weather, to please warm up to at least mid-70's while I am visiting.
Sincerely,
Me

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies
So my grandmother happens to be one of the best cooks/bakers that I know. Thankfully she passed that wonderful trait on to my mother who then was amazing enough to pass that trait on to me. I know, I know. I'm a lucky gal! Recently my grandmother sent me a recipe for these soft and chewy chocolate peanut butter cookies. omg! Seriously, these cookies are so yumtastic that I don't think there are words to describe their chocolaty, peanut buttery goodness! So I thought I'd be pass along the recipe to you, lucky reader o' mine!
Soft & Chewy Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies
1 package (2 layer size) Devil's Food Cake mix
4 oz Philadelphia cream cheese (softened)
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 egg
Preheat oven to 375. Place all ingredients in a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on a low speed for 2 minutes. Beat on a medium speed for an additional 2 minutes. Shape the batter into 1 inch balls. The batter will be mostly dry, but that's okay! When you start making them into balls, they batter will stick together. Place the balls 2 inches apart on baking sheets. (I lightly greased my baking sheets, but I don't think it was needed). Flatten each ball in a criss-cross pattern with the tines of a fork dipped in sugar. Bake for 7-8 minutes, or until the edge of the cookies are set. Cool for 2 minutes on baking sheets. Remove to wire racks and then cool completely. Makes 3.5 dozen cookies.
You can also add 1/2 cup of chopped cocktain peanuts before shaping into balls. It would probably give the cookies a nice sweet and salty mix. I opted not to because I'm not a fan of nuts in my cookies, but if you like nutty cookies, then go for it!
P.S. Sorry for being m.i.a recently... married life has been a little hectic! I'm going to do my best to post at least once per week. thanks for hangin' in there!

pardon me while i climb on my soapbox
I just read an article about the cop who tased the 72 year old woman. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't cops given tasers to use instead of a gun? So if they feel their lives are threatened, they're to use the taser instead of the gun to subdue the suspect. I hardly doubt that a 72 year old woman resisting arrest for refusal to sign a traffic ticket is a death threat. I understand she was in the wrong for resisting arrest, and hell she even provoked the officer by asking to be tased!, but seriously? Was a taser really necessary?? it sickens me every time i read yet another article about a police officer using excessive force when not needed.
And the 5-0 wonder why they aren't respected...
Don't tase me, bro.

it's been awhile since i've posted. with starting a new job that keeps me crazy busy, and planning the wedding that's less than 30 days away, i haven't had time to post. however, something has made me feel the need to blog today. Twitter. yes, i tweet. i have for some time now and have grown quite fond of it. it's an incredibly fun tool to meet people and be nosey about what other people are doing.
apparently, today marks the end of Twitter being an obscure social networking site. at least that's the case if you ask the thousands upon thousands of tweeters devastated by the fact the Oprah has now started tweeting. "oh no!" they cry, "now Twitter is mainstream!" gasp! shock, horror, awe! oh no! what are we going to do? quick, everyone STOP USING TWITTER, its gone mainstream today, and only starting today because Oprah started tweeting.
of course i'm being entirely sarcastic (which i hope you are as fluent in as i).
i love punk rock. i love seeing little bands make their way up into big bands. honestly, i just love watching amazing musicians be able to keep making their amazing music and make tons of money because of their talents. what does this have to do with twitter, you ask? follow along friends. when little bands make it to big bands, people start calling them "sell outs" and those that are new followers are now posers (do people still use that term?). ok, so maybe some bands deserve to be called sell outs and some fans deserve to be called posers. but that's not the majority. anywho, so these bands that are now successful, or mainstream, lose their coolness to the original followers. i see the same thing begining with twitter.
it's all over the news that Oprah has started tweeting. it's all a-twitter that Oprah is now tweeting. people are complaining, in masses, about how twitter is now mainstream because Oprah has joined.
let me ask you this, complainers, why is it that Oprah marks the start of Mainstream Twitter? it didn't go mainstream a year or so ago when it started gaining in popularity so much that celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher, Brittany Spears, and Demi Moore started tweeting? Didn't it go mainstream a year or so ago when the President hopefuls started tweeting? Didn't it go mainstream when social media gurus started "branding" themselves on twitter? why now do you freak out because, oh no, Oprah has started tweeting? does it really make the application any less fun?
last time i checked, cool kids, YOU chose who you follow. YOU choose who's tweets you see. if you don't want to see what Oprah tweets, don't follow her! if you don't want to see the mainstream, don't follow the mainstream tweets! is it really that difficult?
Ok, I'm done ranting now. Carry on. Posers. Or should I say, twosers?

Bare Escentuals Users!
i blogged some time ago about my love for this product. my only complaint is that my skin gets slightly oily when i use it. well, my lovelies, i just heard some fantabulous news from the wonderful girls at the Bare Escentuals store! They are going to be releasing a matte version of Prime Time sometime this spring/early summer!! Yippee!! I can only hope that it will be available before the wedding because that would rock.

design for the birds!
my most recent design obsession is birds. i've never been into birds before, so this bird thing is a little odd to me. at any rate, i came across this wallpaper on my favorite design website (Design Sponge). It's beautiful!! The design is by Parisian designers Minakani.
i think what i love so much about it is that it looks hand drawn, not like any other wallpaper i've seen lately. it's so unique and fun! if I weren't so anti-wallpaper at the moment (thanks to removing wallpaper in my office...), i would consider putting this somewhere in my house.

office space
no, not like the movie. great movie, but not what i'm talking about today. so this weekend was spent planning and painting (which is still not done...) my "creative space." I hate calling it an office. an office sounds so boring. i'm working on assembling a creative space from a former nursery (not mine, was here when i moved in). it's been awesome. i can't wait to finish it up. the only problem is that i feel as under construction as the office. i'm so stoked to have my space be created so that i can make fun creations and interesting blogs. i'll post before and after pics when all is completed. stay tuned.
in the meantime, check out this awesome living room!
Absolutely beautiful!!

new direction
ya know the phrase "shit happens"? well shit happened. this month has been harsh. why, oh why, february, do you hate me? here's the running tally: my car got broken in to, my grandma passed away, and now i'm told i need to interview for a new position or get laid off. the later i was told the day i returned to work from my grandmother's funeral. effing fantastic, right? at first i was feeling rather bitter about the whole thing. who wouldn't? and then i remembered a little blog i posted awhile back about layoffs and the hidden positivity in them.
am i doing what i love?
no...
over the past few months i've discovered my love for design and diy. i'm obsessed with it. i read every blog i can about designing living space, creating cool decorations for the home, creating cool gifts, etc. i love it! especially design sponge. i've started making Valentine's Day cards, Thank You cards, and birthday cards. i love it.
why am i not doing what i love?
i have an extremely hard time with taking the millions of ideas in my head and making them come to life. i struggle. i get discouraged. i give up. but i love the ideas in my head. i'm obsessed with them. i want them to be real.
so what now?
i've decided to go back to school. why the hell not? and this time i'm going to do what i love. i'm going to take design class/art classes/anything to help get these amazing ideas out of my head and onto paper/walls/wherever else they may be placed. since the economy is in the crapper, now is probably the best time to return to school to do what i love. hoping that by the time i'm done, things will be looking up. and i can finally do what i love.

Excitement!!
so it's my birthday today (happy birthday to me!!!) and i got a fancy little email from Sephora telling me that I get a free gift either in store or online! well, in order to get the free gift online, i had to order something. right on the main page, this shampoo/body wash/bubbles product from philosophy caught my precious little eye. first, how gorgeous is the color on the bottle! second, how precious is that little girl's face on the package, and finally, I LOVE CINNAMON! i could hardly contain my excitement! so i ordered it up and cannot wait to get my grubby lil' hands on this product. i'll write a litttle diddy about it when i receive it in the mail sometime next week :)

they're back...
it's true, they're back. the what? the effing flies!!! for those of you who don't know, there is a constant battle with me and the flies that end up on the floor i work on. no one seems to know how these disgusting beings get inside, and no one really has any interest in getting rid of them apparently. i've been told something about the moisture collecting on the underhang of the top of the building the breeds them, but quite frankly, i don't care why they're here and disturbing my work day, i just want them gone.
normally, these ugly, disgusting, filthy creatures only surface in the spring and fall. however, since it reached 46 degrees over the weekend, these devils with wings apparently thought it was time to come out and play. game over, flies. it's not happening. it's still winter, for goodness sake! go back and nest awhile. while you're at it, go somewhere else.
and it's not just a fly or 2 a week. no no, my friends, that would be way better than what i have to deal with. there are normally about 2-3 flies per day that get stuck between the blind and the window at my lovely cube-office. and they aren't little. these are unnaturally large and disgusting flies. when they do get out, they usually fly terribly slow, plop on a piece of paper next to me and die. and scare the shit out of me in the process. i normally come in to about 2 or 3 dead flies on my desk in the morning. and i just pray that i can see them, because most of the time, they end up in my stapler, or right where i grab to open a filing cabinet.
then there are the flies that refuse to die. i usually find these fat bastards lying on the carpet, twitching and moving around, trying to salvage whatever second is left in it's hopeless, disgusting life. i generally let them lay there because who wants to ruin their shoes with that? call me heartless, that's fine. but you try working with these disgusting things on a daily basis. you'll get to the point i'm at in about 2 minutes. trust me.

then there are the flies that refuse to die. i usually find these fat bastards lying on the carpet, twitching and moving around, trying to salvage whatever second is left in it's hopeless, disgusting life. i generally let them lay there because who wants to ruin their shoes with that? call me heartless, that's fine. but you try working with these disgusting things on a daily basis. you'll get to the point i'm at in about 2 minutes. trust me.
yummy!
i love fruit like you wouldn't believe. i love that something so sweet can be so not against my diet! possibly one of my favorite fruits is the orange. not only does it's juice taste fabulous in a mimosa (yummmmmm, champagne!), it's orangey, citrusy goodness tastes delicious any time of the day! bursting with vitamin c (just one orange has 116% for the daily value for vitamin c!), this fabulous fruit provides strong anitoxidants and helps improve the immune system! For more information on the unbelievable health benefits of the incredible, edible orange, check out The World's Healthiest Foods website. Lots of good info on there! You'll be amazed.
That's all. Get back to work now, slackers. :P

stupidity
so my car got broken into last night. it's my own fault. i forgot to close the garage door (note to self: need new reminder system). went to go out to my car this morning and my window was smashed in and our gps was taken. although i'm extremely upset/frustrating/disappointed, i am trying to remember the misfortune of the kleptos. ya see, i don't normally lock my car when it's in the garage. so they didn't have to go through the difficulty of breaking a window. try the door first, dipshits. and lastly, our Garmin has a security code. no security code = no access. haha, you dumb bastards. not only were you not smart enough to check the door, you also went through all that trouble to get something that is now of no worth to you. i may be stupid for not closing the garage door. but you, my thieving friends, are beyond stupid. i would hope that the ghetto would be teaching more advanced thievery techniques these days. but no, still as dumb as ever. you, my friends, are to be commended for your stupidity. you receive an A in my epic fail grade of the day. congratulations.

layoffs
ok so it's no secret that the economy is in the crapper and we're on the bullet train to the next depression (or somewhat depression). layoff rumors have been swirling around my company like you wouldn't believe. yes, it's scary. no, i don't want to be laid off. i like having a job, thank you very much. just as much as the next person. but, somehow, i can't help but think there's a reason for all of this. i believe in God, that's no secret, and so i can't help but believe this is all meant to be and there's a lesson to be learned. perhaps we've all been too greedy. that's the easiest reason i can come up with.
but what if it's more than that?
how many people are stuck in an endless job that they loathe with the fire of a thousand suns? how many people feel sick to their stomachs just thinking about going to work each day? how many people are wasting their God-given talents on a meaningless job? maybe, just maybe, God is wanting us to explore our talents, explore what we want to do in life so that we can be happy. God doesn't want people to suffer. He wants people to be happy.
could you handle that?
being happy?
is that something that you would be able to deal with? honestly. how many people would be okay with being happy? would you be happy living within your means, doing something you love? maybe not spending so lavishly, buying that Escalade you've always wanted, living in a huge house. but doing what you love, having people in your life that do what they love and are happy, having a healthy and happy family? could you handle that?
i know i could.
this "layoff season" has taught me a lot about life and about happiness. sure, i haven't been laid off yet (knock on wood), so maybe i have yet to really know. but i've learned i'm not happy with the place i spend most of my day. it doesn't make me happy. i'm not using the gifts God gave me. i'm a fairly creative person and enjoy doing creative things (knitting, jewelry making, designing stuff). i can't help but think that i can do so much more with my life, so much more that would make me happy. and maybe a layoff (or threat of a layoff) is the only way for me to realize my full potential.
my challenge to you.
so during this time of trauma and doom and gloom, try to see things differently. change your perspective. what can you learn from this? are you doing what you love? if not, maybe now is the time to change things. change your life. make yourself happy. you only have one life to live. make the most of it.

necklaces!
so i make hand-made, hand-stamped, totally customized necklaces. pricing varies based on the amount of customization, however the necklace pictured above would cost $45, including the chain. all pendants are sterling silver and are totally customized. as of right now, i only have letters, numbers, a heart, and a star for stamping options. as my business grows, so will my stamps. please email me at jennbrown_83 [at] msn [dot] com if you have questions. you can also order online at jennbrown83.etsy.com.
i also make necklaces like this picture! (note: this necklace is not in stock) i will post these necklaces as they become available. two-sided necklaces cost $40 -$80, depending on the size of the pendant. one-sided necklaces cost anywhere from $20 - $40, depending on the size of the pendant. again, please email jennbrown_83 [at] msn [dot] com if you have any questions. these necklaces will be posted on jennbrown83.etsy.com as they become available.
Spread the word! if you refer someone who buys a necklace, i will offer $10 off the purchase of your next necklace.

random fact
it's true. i love nerds. i'm not ashamed to admit it any longer. i love nerds and geeks (thankfully my FH is a huge geek!). i love the awkward clothing style, the "here's a nerd question" questions (and answers), the computer/gaming/nerd (and geek) speak conversations, i just love nerds! and Brittany Spears (not a nerd). i also love cotton candy. and nerds. and now you know how nerdy/awkward/geeky i really am. the end.
reality check
for those of you who have no idea who Gary Vaynerchuk is, you should really educate yourself. not only is he incredibly knowledgeable in wine, he also has amazing insights on life, work, and success. check out the video and then check out his website. it's a lil' dose of reality every time i watch one of his vids. truly an amazing guy!

It's the little things.
there are many things that make me happy and smile in life. usually, it's the little things that most don't get enjoyment out of. such as Upside Down Dogs, for starters. or the picture of the extremely happy baby on this post. or movies like Biodome. the little thing that made me happy today was downloading Firefox to my work computer. the version of ie we have plain sucks and makes me want to go Office Space on my PC. so anyway, was having my usual issues today, and had the pleasure of speaking to a super cool IT employee (almost as cool as my FH) who listens to Wilco (rockin'), who told me (drum roll please!) that yes! i can download Firefox! yippee!! i feel as happy as a clam! or as happy as that baby. either way, effing happy! oh the things simple minds enjoy!

I feel like this today...
i don't know what happened! i woke up with energy, arrived at work with energy, and now i'm falling fast. perhaps it's time for a Mt Dew? otherwise, i'll look like that little girl. except with my head on my desk. snoring. loudly.

Are You Watching This?
if you aren't, you should. the Mentalist is probably one of my favorite crime shows on right now. it may even beat my love for Criminal Minds, which is tough to say because i heart the nerdy fellow on CM (i love nerds!). the main character, Patrick Jane, is a former psychic who helps out a crime unit. he's hilarious and oh so clever! watch it. you'll love it. anyway, check out the Mentalist on CBS on Tuesdays at 9pm ET.

New Obsession
I heart make-up. And I heart Bare Minerals make-up. And the best thing for my love affair with Bare Minerals is my new obsession: Prime Time. It's a foundation primer. At first, I was rather skeptical about the product. I couldn't believe that it would make my skin any smoother than my current lotion. Boy, was I wrong!! This stuff is amazing! I have never had my make-up glide on my skin this easy before. And my make-up lasts so much longer! My skin no longer eats the make-up by 10am. FAB product! I give it two enthusiastic thumbs way up. (if you can tell me what movie that phrase is from, I'll reward you. Handsomely. Ok, I'll just say good job.)

A New Beginning
Well I've decided to start a bloggity-blog. Instead of boring the FH with my random rantings/thoughts/whatever, it's time to start blogging. And with the wedding only 4 months away, I'm sure I'll have a ton to write about.
Speaking of wedding plans... Oh disaster! Life Lession #5,674,281: Never never NEVER barter services without a contract, no matter who you are bartering services with! Our invitations are now late thanks to a little bartering of goods gone bad. Seriously. The whole situation could have been potentially avoided had a little contract been signed stating both parties' expectations. Instead, the invitations girly isn't living up to our expectations, and the only contract we have to show for was written waaaaay too late! Now we're fighting the good fight to get our invitations sent. As of today, if we have no designs from the designer, our bartering of services is off. More to come...
